The Challenge

Imperial College London was leading the world’s largest study into adolescent smartphone use & mental health. While the research was groundbreaking in scale, the team faced a key challenge: existing tools couldn’t ethically or effectively engage young users, nor gather meaningful, privacy-compliant health data to support long-term wellbeing analysis.

Our Human-Centred Approach

Delivered through a co-designed 12-week prototype phase, we applied our Human-Centred AI Readiness Framework to build trust, safety & behaviour change into the foundation of the solution:

  • AI-Ready Strategy: Developed a Safety by Design product & data strategy, aligned to GDPR-K & child compliant rights

  • AI-Ready Product: Designed a gamified wellbeing app to help teens improve sleep & screen use - with ethical, age-appropriate UX & encrypted on-device data storage

  • AI-Ready Process: Applied positive NLP nudges, reward loops & personalisation to drive real behavioural change while preserving trust & user control

  • Ecosystem Enablement: Partnered closely with Imperial’s research team, incorporating behavioural science & validating outcomes in a live setting

Impact

  • 80% of adolescent users improved sleep outcomes during the 3-month pilot
